Throwback Thursday

Throwback Thursday

Jacob Blieu

Gz and Hustlas | Doggystyle (1993) | Snoop Dogg

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" This is the question posed at the beginning of our first throwback. Most of the kids say generic answers like, I want to be a teacher, doctor, etc., but then the question is turned onto Snoop. In classic gangster fashion he smoothly replies with,"I wanna be a muthafuckn hustla, better ask somebody," and suddenly you are thrown into the world of the perfect car jam when the Dr. Dre production slams into place.

Favorite Bar:

"We flow toe for toe, if you ain't on the Row/ Fuck you and your hoe, really doe, so check it"          - Snoop Dogg

The What feat. Method Man | Ready to Die (1994) |  The Notorious B.I.G.

On this song, Big chooses to pair up with Wu-Tang Clan's very own, Method Man. While generally lost amidst this iconic album's many classic tracks, the pair's incredibly energy brings me coming back to this song time and time again. Biggie's wordplay and Method Man's lyricism, plus his overall charisma makes this one of my favorite throwbacks every week.

Favorite Bar:

"I use to get feels on a bitch/ Now I throw shields on the dick/ To stop me from that HIV shit"          - Biggie Smalls

"Verse two, coming with that Old E brew/ Meth-ical, putting n****s back in ICU"    - Method Man

Ready or Not | The Score (1996) | Fugees

The Score by the Fugees is an undeniable hip-hop classic that has proved its timelessness. The song features the entire trio: Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel, however Lauryn steal the show. The smooth production perfectly compliments the verses of Wyclef and Pras, but when Lauryn Hill starts on the chorus, everyone in the room will be singing along.

Favorite Bar:

"Ready or not, here I come, you can't hide/ Gonna find you and take it slowly"                     (Lauryn Hill)
